The human desire for enhanced physical appearance has a long and interesting history, perhaps as long as the history of our species.
As products and techniques have developed during the last century, aesthetic procedures have become increasingly more common. Just over two decades ago, Drs. Carruthers and Carruthers described the first aesthetic use of Botox (botulinum toxin type A; Allergan, Inc., Irvine, Calif.) for the treatment of glabellar frown lines, otherwise known as your 11’s.
It can be reasonably argued that Botox injections have helped revolutionize aesthetic dermatology, plastic surgery, and aesthetic medicine providing medical and surgical professionals with an expanded armamentarium of approaches to achieving aesthetic ideals. As medical and surgical technology have advanced, the goals of treatment have become increasingly refined, evolving from the rather basic goals of wrinkle reduction and elimination to the more developed concept of facial enhancement, that is, creating balance and harmony and maintaining and enhancing expression, as well as providing a natural looking symmetry.
Art and science combine to integrate anatomy and physiology with individual character, features, personality, and cultural ideals to help achieve an optimal result.
Approximately 86 percent of the usage was in women. The majority of use (54.5 percent) was in patients aged 35 to 50 years. An additional 26.5 percent of use was in patients aged 51 to 64 years. Even in the 19- to 34-year age category, Botox injections was the second most common procedure, accounting for 14.1 percent of total use.
Nearly 80 percent of the total use was for the treatment of glabellar lines. The most common combination treatment was glabellar and forehead lines. The next most common combination was glabellar lines and crow’s feet.
Overall clinical and study experience with Botox treatment for facial enhancement indicates that it is effective and safe in both the short and long term. Since it was first used for significant reduction in the appearance of glabellar frown lines, Botox has been used successfully for a wide range of facial enhancement procedures, including the treatment of horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, the perioral area, the dimpled chin, and neck bands.
